By winning our Talent Connection competition of 2023, Master’s student Stephane Um Mayo earned a ‘money can’t buy’ mentoring opportunity with Four Seasons. Fresh from trips to two of the brand’s most prestigious hotels, he reports back on the experience.
As I mentioned at the time I won through the Talent Connection finals, I felt it would be an amazing experience to be mentored by one of the top hospitality companies in the world.
And with my trips to Geneva and Paris, the experience certainly didn’t disappoint!
Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva
My first immersion visit, to Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva, provided an unparalleled opportunity for my professional views and development. Over the three days of this visit, I had the privilege of immersing myself in the day-by-day operation of three key departments and also to participate in strategic meetings with the General Manager.
The departments I shadowed were Revenue Management, Public Relations, and Marketing. This was a fully immersive experience; for example, on the revenue management side I was able to get involved with developing pricing strategies to optimize revenue, as well as participating in revenue forecasting and inventory management processes.
On the PR and Marketing side, meanwhile, I engaged with media partners to promote brand awareness, contributed to preparation of PR campaigns and events, assisted in managing social media, and helped to create and implement marketing campaigns across various platforms.
What I observed and experienced during these stints emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making and showcased the dynamic strategies in marketing and public relations which are designed to enhance brand engagement and market responsiveness. I also learned the importance of adaptability and agility in responding to market dynamics.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to learn from, and contribute to, such a prestigious organization. The insights gained and relationships forged during this visit will undoubtedly shape my professional journey for years to come.
Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris
From the moment I stepped through the doors of Four Seasons Hotel George V the objective was clear: to gain firsthand experience and insights into the operational, strategic, and cultural facets that make this hotel a sublimation of luxury hospitality.
My two-day immersion at Four Seasons George V in Paris was not just an educational journey but a profound insight into the passion and dedication that define the Four Seasons brand. From strategic management to financial acuity, the experience provided a panoramic view of luxury hotel management, underscoring the intricate balance between operational excellence and visionary leadership.
As in Geneva, I gained exposure to the key areas of Revenue Management, Marketing and Communications. In Paris, I also gained exposure to the Sales department, providing a deep dive into the strategic frameworks that underpin Four Seasons’ performance. These sessions revealed the intricacies of revenue strategies and the systemic approach to sales that distinguishes Four Seasons in a competitive market.
Discussions covered topics ranging from revenue management to strategic sales, focusing on metrics like RevPAR and ADR that drive profitability. This experience peeled back layers of luxury management, revealing the precision of team management and financial strategies that are a hallmark of Four Seasons’ success.
My Paris trip also included a meaningful conversation with Mrs Anna-Laure Soulier, Director of Talent Acquisition, reflecting on my career aspirations and the insights garnered from my initial journey at Four Seasons. This discussion not only provided a personal touch to my experience but also gave me some guidance on navigating career paths within the hospitality industry.
My concluding thoughts
These exposures have proven invaluable, not only to my understanding of the nuances of luxury hospitality, but also to my personal and professional growth.
I am profoundly grateful for the guidance and mentorship from Mr Tom Chirico, Vice President Operations Finance EMEA; Mrs Louisa Birch, Area Director, Corporate People and Culture EMEA at Four Seasons Corporate Office EMEA; Mrs Mariam El Idrissi El Amran, and Mrs Anne-Laure Soulier, along with the entire teams at Four Seasons in Geneva and Paris. And not forgetting the faculty and Careers specialists at Glion for facilitating these incredible opportunities.
